About Gelug School:
The
Gulug school was founded by Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) in
Tibet. It is also known as The Yellow Hat Tradition. The
first Dalai Lama Je Gedundrubpa was a direct disciple of
Je Tsongkhapa. Je Tsongkhapa is known as the greatest Tibetan
Buddhist scholar on the interpretations of the Buddha's
teachings especially concerning the concept of emptiness.
His works consist of eighteen volumes, both on Tantra and
Sutra. While Lamrim ( Stages of The Path ) is the most popular
text in the Buddhist world, Legshed Nyingpo ( The Essence
of Eloquent Speech ) which propounds the concept of emptiness
and Dronsel ( Clear Lamp ) which explains the Tantric path
are the two most profound Buddhist classical writings. All
Dalai Lamas including the present, belong to this tradition.
This tradition has a very healthy culture of learning through
debate and all aspects of the Buddha's teachings have to
be thoroughly debated and discussed in order to understand
and come to personal conclusions. This bodes well with the
western skepticism and hence has gained much popularity
in the west. Je Tsongkhapa is recognized as the manifestation
of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, Chenresig the Buddha
of Compassion and Vajrapani the Buddha of infinite power.
